Why you'll love it

Because Vitamin B12 is a building block of life – it’s essential for the formation of DNA, nerves and blood cells, and provides your body with energy. There are no plant-based sources that contain sustainable amounts of B12, so it’s critical for those following a plant based diet, vegetarians and vegans to ensure that they’re getting enough from other fortified sources in their diet, and also often from supplements.

While many things get better with age, sadly your ability to absorb and use B12 efficiently isn’t one of them. This is partially due to a natural decrease in stomach acid production over the age of 50, and can also be caused by long term use of over the counter or prescription drugs used to suppress stomach acid.

Many other conditions can predispose someone to B12 absorption problems such as celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, pancreas dysfunction, history of bowel or stomach surgery and others, so check with your health care professional to get your blood work done to see if supplementation is right for you.

Why this formula?

There are two forms of B12 supplements currently available: Cyanocobalamin or methylcobalamin. Both are very similar in structure, but differ in the molecule attached to the cobalt ion. While methylcobalamin contains a methyl group, cyanocobalamin contains a cyanide molecule. The methyl form is the naturally occurring form that can be found in food sources, and it tends to be better absorbed and retained in our tissues than its synthetic counterpart.

Our supplement comes as a sublingual tablet that can be dissolved in the mouth for immediate absorption into the body, bypassing the digestive system.

Because vegetarians, vegans and those with gluten intolerances are amongst the highest consumers of Vitamin B12, it was very important to us to select a supplement that was free from animal products and other common allergens.

How much do I really need?

If you are consuming animal-based products such as meat, fish or eggs 2-3 times a day, the answer is, not much! Even though Vitamin B12 is very critical to the maintenance of good health, the general adult population can get the required 2.4mcg per day from food sources or from a good quality multivitamin. If however, you are part of a population that does require supplementation, we recommend taking 1000mcg a few times a week. The reason for this is that you body can only absorb small amounts of B12 by passive absorption over a period of time so for most people, daily dosing is unnecessary, especially when using the methylated form which tends to stay in the body for longer amounts of time.

Having said that, there is no upper limit identified for Vitamin B12 because of its low potential for toxicity. Individuals that are currently in a state of deficiency or those who have difficulties with absorption may require significantly higher doses or a different dosage form, and should consult with a healthcare professional to determine the appropriate dose for their condition.
