Why you'll love it

Because your life could use a little more culture! Probiotic means “for life” and the friendly bacteria found in supplement and food form are really into improving your health. Thousands of years ago, Hippocrates declared that “All Disease Begins in the Gut” and it’s turning out that he may have been on to something! Modern science is now supporting this statement, linking poor gut health to a wide range of diseases. Here’s a fun fact: there are about as many bacterial cells in our body as there are human cells!

Intestinal flora play such an important role, and supplementing with Probiotics can really have a profound effect on promoting overall good health. In fact, 70% of the immune system is located in the intestine which makes sense when you consider that the gut is actually the gatekeeper responsible for allowing the passage nutrients while preventing toxins from entering our bloodstream.

While the body of research around probiotics continues to grow, a number of clinical trials already support the use of probiotics for:

  • Maintenance of overall good health
  • Promotion of proper intestinal environment
  • Stimulation of the gastrointestinal tract and systemic immunity
  • Pregnancy support and improved immunity of newborn
  • Prevention and treatment of:
    • Antibiotic induced diarrhea
    • Urinary tract infections
    • Vaginal yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis
    • Eczema
    • Food allergies

Pregnancy is definitely a time to consider using probiotics as they can help with some of the classic woes of pregnancy, including diarrhea and constipation. Recent research looking into the effects of probiotics on decreasing the risk of preterm birth and gestational diabetes is quite promising. There is already evidence supporting the fact that the maternal microbiome has a definite impact on the fetal gut microbiome, including the observation that the moment the baby comes into contact with the maternal vaginal bacteria during delivery, the colonization of it’s gastrointestinal tract begins.

Further to this, studies have linked common allergic disorders in babies such as asthma and eczema to mothers who have lower concentrations of Bifidobacteria (the primary organism introduced during delivery). The evidence is so compelling that the World Allergy Organization adopted the use of probiotics in their guidelines to help prevent allergies for (a) pregnant women at high risk for having an allergic child; (b) women who breastfeed infants at high risk of developing allergies; and (c) infants at high risk of developing allergies

The more we learn about the fact that one’s microbiome begins in utero, the more important it becomes to understand the need to set the stage for a diverse microbiome even before becoming pregnant. This can  help prevent bacterial infection during delivery and also help to support a healthy foundation for the immune function of the baby.

While supplements are a great way to ensure diversity, a diet rich in fermented foods is equally important and should be considered as adjunctive therapy to taking probiotics in pill form.

Why this formula?

Shopping for Probiotics is more complicated than playing the stock market! The options are endless and often quality can be questionable. Even an expert in the field could spend hours comparing and contrasting the products on the shelf, so we have made it simple and outlined our “must-haves” when selecting our supplement:

  1. It has to include a variety of strains that have been clinically tested in doses similar to, or the same as what is used in clinical trials
  2. It has to have enough live active cultures of each strain to actually have a therapeutic benefit
  3. The exact genus, species and strain of each bacteria needs to be identified by the manufacturer
  4. It has to have a guaranteed number of Colony Forming Units (CFU’s) at expiry, not just at the time of manufacture
  5. It has to be free from undesirable and unnecessary fillers
  6. It has to be shelf stable

This formula contains bacteria that can live in both the vagina and gastrointestinal tract and can assist in restoring both digestive and vaginal harmony.

We offer a variety of different probiotic supplements and recommend our customers alternate between them every 4 months to help establish microbial diversity.   Having more strains provides strength in numbers as well as variation in the type of bacteria you are colonizing with. High concentrations of fewer strains can be great for treating certain conditions like antibiotic associated diarrhea, however diversity is important in supplements used for daily, general health so as not to end up with an over-colonization of any specific strain of bacteria.

How much do I really need?

If you’re looking to supplement with Probiotics for overall good health, we recommend taking one capsule once or twice daily of either of our available formulas. Probiotics should be taken with food since the acidic environment of an empty stomach is often too harsh for these delicate little guys. Just like babies, they need food, water and warmth to survive. Studies have shown that Probiotics taken within 30 minutes of a meal, especially one with a beneficial fat, have the highest survival, and therefore efficacy,  rates.

Those wishing to use Probiotics therapeutically may require higher doses for different periods of time. We suggest consulting with your primary care provider to determine the strain and dose that’s right for your condition at your particular stage of treatment.

Generally, Probiotics are well tolerated, but it’s important to know that not all probiotics are right for every person. If you experience bloating after taking a probiotic supplement or experience significant change in bowel habits such as extreme diarrhea or constipation, then these probiotics may not be right for you. In individuals who suffer from particular conditions such as SIBO or candida, some combinations of Probiotics may make your condition worse. We recommend working with your primary care provider to determine exactly which strains will be beneficial in your case.
