Why you'll love it

Because this ultra relaxing mineral is great for your mind, body and spirit! Quite literally though, Magnesium is responsible for the relaxation of everything from blood vessels for a healthy heart, to smooth muscle for easing cramps, to bowels to keep things regular, to the nervous system to help with sleep and more! It’s not surprising that it impacts so many body systems seeing as it’s the fourth most abundant mineral in the body and is responsible for over 300 biochemical reactions.

If you’re skipping your daily salads, passing on the beans and legumes and not so nuts about nuts, your Magnesium levels may be lower than ideal. In fact, Magnesium deficiency is quite prevalent, being the second most common deficiency in developed countries (second to Vitamin D). Specifically, in Canada, up to 40% of the population has less than recommended levels. The disappointing news however, is that even if you do regularly partake in these Magnesium rich foods, they tend to be much lower in Magnesium now than they were back in our grandparents days due to a gradual depletion in our soil quality. Furthermore, prescription medications and antibiotics are being used more often on a daily basis, affecting our ability to absorb and properly utilize the Magnesium we do get from our foods.

Magnesium is also a well-known supplement when it comes to pain management. Individuals suffering from fibromyalgia, symptoms of PMS, migraines and restless leg syndrome have all seen improvements in their symptoms when supplementing with Magnesium at the appropriate doses.

Those with difficulty falling or staying asleep could definitely benefit from supplementing with Magnesium before bed as the relaxing properties of Magnesium are sure to lull you into a quiet  slumber.

Why this formula?

Search your favourite online health retailer and you will find that there are thousands (3249 to be exact) of Magnesium supplements to choose from, so how do you know which is best? When it comes to Magnesium, form really does matter. Magnesium carbonate, sulfate, gluconate and oxide are all poorly absorbed forms and should be reserved for those using Magnesium for a bowel cleanse. Be mindful, because interestingly, these are the forms most often found in many of the off-the-shelf supplements. Taking these forms of supplements will usually just result in loose stools and will show little to no benefit if you are trying to treat a specific condition.

Rather, it’s better to look for a supplement that contains Magnesium citrate, bisglycinate, malate, aspartate or taurate as these are far better absorbed. This supplement contains Magnesium Bisglycinate chosen for its excellent bioavailability as well as the fact that it doesn’t have a laxative effect at higher doses unlike other Magnesium supplements thanks to it being absorbed in a different part of the gut. Both Magnesium and glycine have calming and relaxing effects making this supplement ideal for PMS as well as pain and muscle related issues.

If you’ve taken a good quality, high potency, Magnesium supplement before, you will know that they are often quite large and some people find them hard to swallow. We have been sure to select a supplement in a capsule form to make it a bit easier to get down. As well, taking a supplement in capsule form will help minimize the amount of fillers you are taking in.

How much do I really need?

The dose of magnesium required depends on the condition you are looking to treat. For fibromyalgia pain, studies have shown that pain and tenderness seem to improve with doses of 300mg daily. Symptoms of restless legs syndrome can be kept at bay with 600mg daily before bed. Not only does Magnesium help to relax the muscles,  it also contributes to a more restful sleep. Migraine sufferers have long touted the benefits of Magnesium as part of their migraine prevention protocol. Typically, doses of 600mg have helped to decrease the severity, frequency and duration of migraines.

While there’s some evidence to show that Magnesium can be beneficial for alleviating symptoms of PMS, there’s a wider array of information available about its use for treating menstrual cramps. One particular protocol recommends a baseline of 300mg to 600mg daily with an additional 600mg capsule taken starting three days prior to your period and continuing until day two.

Our bodies know how much Magnesium is required and absorb only what is needed, so there aren’t too many side effects with this supplement. Excessive doses however, may cause diarrhea and gastrointestinal upset.
